Giving back through education

Swire has a long history of educational sponsorship in Hong Kong. We believe that giving young people a chance to build a better future for themselves is one of the best ways to give back to the communities that have helped our businesses grow and prosper.

In the early 1900s, when the idea of establishing a university in Hong Kong for local and Mainland students was first proposed, Swire was one of the few foreign firms who were willing to put their hands in their pockets to help fund it, contributing the sum of £40,000. As a result, in 1911, the new University of Hong Kong (HKU) created the Taikoo Chair of Engineering, becoming the first named professorship at HKU.

Today, the Swire Group provides a wide variety of scholarships, grants and bursaries across the globe to graduate and post-graduate students at tertiary level, as well as to secondary school students.

Swire Scholars reunion

In November 2024, Swire Scholars past and present gathered for a reunion. It was wonderful to see scholars from different generations coming together to reconnect and catch up on each other’s journeys, with former scholars sharing their experiences in the hope of inspiring and encouraging younger students to strive for a brighter future. The aim is to build on this event to forge closer connections within the Swire Scholars community.
